The school is very small in size: its core of students, who are called normaliens , are selected via either a competitive exam called a concours (Baccalauréat + 2 years) a secondary selection process centred on the preparation of a research project (Baccalauréat +2–4 years) and a Phd selection (since 2010). Preparation for the "concours" takes place in preparatory classes which last two years (see grandes écoles ). Two hundred normaliens are thus recruited every year, half of them in the sciences and the same number in the humanities, and receive a monthly salary (around €1,300/month in 2015), and in exchange they sign a ten-year contract to work for the state. Although it is seldom applied in practice, this exclusivity clause is redeemable (often by the hiring firm).

On 8 June 1993, a few weeks before his trial was to begin, Bousquet was shot dead at his apartment at 34 Avenue Raphaël in Paris [6] by the 51-year-old Christian Didier who, accused of murder, pleaded not guilty, as he claimed the killing was justified by Bousquet's wartime crimes. [11] With a history of pursuing former Vichy officials, Didier held a press conference to announce his killing of a "monster". He was defended by Thierry Lévy  ( fr ) and Arnaud Montebourg . [11] Didier was ruled sane although the court heard testimony about his mental problems; he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison. [12] Had the trial against Bousquet proceeded, it would have been the first against a French citizen for crimes against humanity, in fact "it would have been the trial of the Vichy regime", according to The Independent .
